The Isaiah House Outreach began 15 years ago when Pastor Mike Kinman heard God's call on his life to feed the homeless and under-resourced in Covington, Kentucky. Each month, Mike and members of his church, Faith Christian Center in Park Hills, would pack bags of groceries and distribute them to people in need. In my eyes, Mike was an early pioneer of outward focused evangelism or taking the church to the people. Mike has since gone to be with the Lord, but his flock can still be found the last Saturday of each month in the parking lot of John G. Carlisle School sharing God's word, praying with people in line and meeting physical needs with bags of groceries. LifeLine Ministries of NKY has had the pleasure of serving alongside the Faith Christian servants for several years now by packing and distributing care bags filled with personal hygiene items such as bar soap, tooth paste and hand lotion, plus many more helpful items. We have also been blessed to give away many additional items to give these folks a "hand Up" on poverty. Notice I said a "hand up" and not a "hand out". Most everyone we meet is simply looking for ways to get back on their feet and not be a burden on the system. This "hand up" comes in the form of winter coats and clothing in the winter time, personal grocery carts to ease the burden of getting their groceries home on foot to gifts of Christmas toys for their children and Grandchildren. A sandwich, cold soft drink and hot coffee are always on hand to meet immediate hunger needs and further lavish God's love. Jesus himself met physical needs in order to meet spiritual needs. Its difficult for someone that's hungry to focus on anything other than their next meal, so by taking their mind off of hunger, they can concentrate on the spiritual food of the Good News of Jesus Christ. If you have never experienced the joy of meeting someone's physical need to model the love of Jesus to others, you need to come and serve with us. You'll leave more blessed than those you intended to be a blessing to. (You'll also leave with a deeper appreciation of all that God's provided your own family!) All you have to do is step outside of your life for one moment and grasp the realization of not having food on your table or a roof over your head. Sobering isn't it? Please help us do something about it! For more information about the Isaiah House Outreach, please email Dawn Roberts at Dawnr@lifelineofnky.org or call her at 859-653-7446. |
